About Us

Founded by Charles A Baker, Sterling first made its mark in 1904 by supplying American foundries with heavy duty foundry flasks. These flasks were fabricated from special rolled channel steel and had the highest quality standards to withstand the rugged environments.

In 1905, T.L Smith, inventor of the tilting concrete mixer, purchased a controlling interest in Sterling. After proven success in the foundries, Sterling decided to expand and develop a complete line of wheelbarrows and carts that served not only foundries but numerous industries ranging from food service to construction. It was then, in 1905, when Sterling delivered the very first wheelbarrow in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A century later, Sterling continues to set the standard across all industries by producing heavy-duty, high-quality products. Sterling’s flagship “Tough Guy” wheelbarrow has made a lasting impression across many industries. Sterling continues to be the go-to wheelbarrow for all industries as it’s Built Tough from the Bottom Up.
